Meet Mountain Valley Culinary Ambassador Chef Michael Reed

A recognizable favorite in the LA restaurant scene, Chef Michael Reed showcases his brand of Natural American Goodness at both his restaurants across the city as well as through his work supporting his community - regularly supporting hospitals, children’s organizations, social justice causes and more.

About Chef Reed 

Born and raised in Oxnard, CA, Michael Reed grew up in the quaint farming community on the coast of California. Today, he helms an eclectic collection of Los Angeles restaurants, as well as a high-end catering company, drawing inspiration from his extensive culinary background in acclaimed kitchens from New York to LA. 

Reed attended University of California, Santa Barbara on a track and field scholarship where he studied business, but quickly realized his passion for cooking and enrolled in the Culinary Institute of America in New York. While in culinary school, Reed commuted from the Hyde Park campus every day to cook at The Modern, the acclaimed restaurant at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in Manhattan. After graduating in 2008, Reed returned to Southern California and worked for David Myer at Sona, as well as Nancy Silverton’s applauded Osteria Mozza in Los Angeles. 

In 2011, Reed and his wife, Kwini, started their own high-end catering company, Root of All Food, which specializes in high-end boutique catering, in-home cooking, and events for celebrities and CEOs throughout Los Angeles. During the summer of 2014, the Reeds opened beloved DTLA restaurant, Poppy + Rose, specializing in classic American diner fare with honest ingredients, and was lauded by Eater as one of the best brunch spots in LA. In late 2017, Reed joined the team at Viviane, the restaurant at the Avalon Beverly Hills, where he uses his experience in the industry to create rustic, refined dishes with seasonal ingredients in a chic poolside setting. Most recently, Reed opened H Café in the former East West Hotel in Koreatown in Winter 2018, where he also serves as Executive Chef and won first place for his Spicy Fried Chicken Sandwich in the competition at Plate by Plate, an annual tasting benefit hosted by Project by Project in Los Angeles. 

When he is not in the kitchen, Reed spends quality time with Kwini and their daughter, Mackenzie. Reed is also an avid cycler and enjoys riding his bike across new terrains throughout Southern California. 

About his restaurants 

Poppy + Rose in Downtown Los Angeles, Calif. was founded in 2014 and serves seasonal, elevated country kitchen styled comfort food in a relaxed, floral-themed ambiance. All of the dishes from the restaurant’s extensive menu are made from scratch, with original recipe’s crafted in Reed’s kitchen. In addition to the restaurant’s focus of using quality, seasonal ingredients and bringing hearty brunch favorites to Downtown LA, Poppy + Rose frequently gives back to the community, supporting hospitals, children’s organizations, social justice causes and more through financial assistance and meal donations.
